Nearing the end of the 1800s a new disease came into rise known as Poliomyelitis (polio). This was a crippling illness affecting the spine and respiratory system through infection, resulting in enormous portions of vulnerable people to become deathly ill and even permanently paralyzed. During the early 1900s the disease took hold of the young and by the 1950s nearly 21,000 paralytic cases emerged.
Devices to aid in physical therapy became in high demand, with a specific call for leg braces and wheelchairs to help the lame. These tiny braces were made to fit a young child, likely that of a toddler. This pair of boots and hardware are an example of a wealthier families ability to provide for their child, where sadly, many were fashioned from whatever an impoverished family could find on hand.
This dark glimpse into history is a reminder of our progress in the scientific world, and sadly those that were subject to sickness we once knew nothing about.
