This stunning apothecary jar shows a rare example of UV reactive manganese dioxide. This jar was originally clear glass when manufactured but due to age and light exposure the oxide reacted to the UV rays omitted by our sun and permanently altered the coloration of the jar to a soft violet. This jar was likely made in the late 1800s and displays with a crack around the neck of the jar. The stopper is ground glass and can be opened.
